It's challenging to follow a healthy diet on vacation, but when you have a dietary restriction finding food that fits into your guidelines seems impossible! You’re removed from your local grocery store, regular restaurants, and maybe even the language you use to convey your dietary needs. Traveling to a foreign place can seem out of reach if you don’t know how you’re going to survive two weeks without your regular foods.

Traveling with Diet RestrictionPlan Ahead

While you’re researching the museums you want to see, take a quick look at the eateries surrounding those must-see destinations. If you can, call ahead and see if you can get a copy of the menu, or at least ask what type of allergens or restrictions they can serve. If you gather a list of a few, you’re sure to have plenty of eating options.

For even more preparation, bring some diet approved snacks to keep you full you’re out and enjoying your vacation spot.

Cook for Yourself

It might be easiest to book accommodations that have a kitchen and hit the local grocery store. Cooking all your own meals is the only surefire way you won’t consume food you shouldn’t have. If you’re dictating the menu, you won’t have to do any of that restaurant research, or risk going to a restaurant where you can’t eat.

Learn the Language

Traveling somewhere that speaks a different language?Try to learn key phrases like “does this have dairy?” or “do you have gluten-free options?”. This can also help you read the menu at the local restaurant or grocery shopping (if you’re following tip #2!). Make a list of the common foods that are irritating to you and learn those words in the language. It’ll make traveling just a little less stressful. Bring Medications

Life happens, and there is no avoiding that. If you are allergic to a particular food and you accidentally consume it, don’t let it ruin your trip. Make sure you to have whatever counteracting medication you use with you at all times. Remember, medications are okay on the plane if you are traveling by air.
