5 Prediabetes Facts You Need to Know Immediately

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. Right now, more than 30 million Americans are living with Diabetes. But have you ever heard of Prediabetes?

At ExpressMed, Diabetes education is important to us. Many people don’t know about the condition that predicates a Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis. But it's more common than you may think. It’s possible to prevent Type 2 Diabetes down the road with a few lifestyle changes. It's also possible to prevent Prediabetes as well if you know the facts and what to look for.
There is so little education surrounding the condition and how to prevent it. We needed to share with you some of the little known facts that are crucial for Diabetes prevention.

Prediabetes Facts

  1. 1 in 3 Americans currently live with Prediabetes, roughly 84 million.
  2. 90% of people don’t know they have the condition.
  3. Moderate weight loss of just 7% of total body weight cuts your risk of Type 2 Diabetes in half.
  4. 15-30% of people living with the condition will be diagnosed with Type 2 within 5 years.
  5. 95% of Diabetes cases are Type 2, which is a direct result of this condition.

Prediabetes Risks

  1. If you are overweight, you are at an increased risk of developing Prediabetes and Type 2 Diabetes.
  2. 45 years of age or older is considered to be in a higher risk category for developing both these conditions.
  3. A direct relative like a brother, sister, or mother that has Type 2 Diabetes increases your risk for developing it as well.
  4. Less than 3 hours a week of physical activity and a sedentary job is a large factor in weight gain, increasing your Diabetes risk.
  5. If you had Gestational Diabetes, or gave birth to a baby weighing over 9 pounds, your risk is increased.
  6. African Americans, Hispanic/Latin Americans, Native Americans, and Pacific Islanders have an increased risk.

Signs and Symptoms

  1. Having an A1C reading between 5.7% and 6.5%.
  2. Having fasting glucose between 100 and 125 mg/dl.
  3. No symptoms you can physically feel.
Lifestyle changes such as losing weight and exercise reduce your risk of Type 2 Diabetes. There are no obvious symptoms you can feel that trigger you to speaking your doctor. To prevent the condition, make sure you eat a healthy diet and get plenty of exercise to stave off a Type 2 diagnosis.
