Medical gauze is a bleached white fabric used for cleansing, covering, and securing post-surgery or deep wounds. There are two main types of gauze dressings: woven or non-woven gauze.

Woven gauze usually has multiple layers of woven cotton which allows fluids from the wound to be absorbed into the fiber. Closely woven gauze is best for extra strength or greater protection while open or loose weave is better for absorbency or drainage. Woven gauze is most commonly used and is the more economical option.

Non-woven gauze typically uses synthetic material to look like a woven gauze but is more breathable.
