Buying Guide: Transport Chair
What is a transport chair?
A transport chair is a lightweight mobility chair. It combines the function of a wheelchair with the portability of a rollator. Transport chairs should be be pushed by someone other than the user due to the small wheels. They usually have either aluminum or steel frames and front swivel wheels. The rear wheels come fixed and a hand brake.
What are the uses of a transport chair?
A transport chair is primarily used for short trips, as it's easily portable. It can be used when going to a doctor's appointment, grocery store, and even restaurants. A transport chair can also be used for longer periods of time. However, you should use a wheelchair cushion and back cushion to increase comfort.
What do you look for in a transport chair?
One of the most important aspects of a transport chair would be the chair's overall weight. The weight would affect the ability to push and lift the chair, so select a weight that your caretaker would be comfortable with.
Another important thing to look for is to ensure the chair is the correct size for you. Transport chairs typically come in 3 sizes:
- Narrow - 16"-17" wide seat meant for users 120 lbs and under
- Medium – 18"-20" wide seat for users between 120 and up to 300 lbs
- Wide – 22" wide seat or wider meant for users over 300 lbs
Size is extremely important because you do not want one that is too small, as it might not support your weight. However, you do not want a chair that is too large either. If it's too large, it may become too heavy for your caretaker to push you.
Below is a comparison chart between 3 top transport chairs. Remember to note the weight capacity, seat width, and overall weight to find the chair that is right for you.
