World Cancer Day: How to Prevent Cancer in Your Daily Life
February 4th is World Cancer Day.
Cancer death rates are steadily dropping and the number of new cases is staying the same year over year. But cancer is still the second leading causes of death worldwide.
Are we close to a cure? Maybe not, but studies suggest that early detection is the key to preventing a long a grueling recovery from cancer, or even death.
How to Prevent Cancer
1. Early screenings
Cancer can’t be 100% prevented, and there’s no way of knowing if you’ll get cancer. But more than one-third of cancer deaths are now thought to be completely preventable.
The best thing to do is to get screenings early and often, especially if you know you’re at risk. For example, if a direct relative has cancer, your risk will be higher, and you should take extra steps to prevent the disease from developing.
2. Stay Active and Eat Well
Many cancers like colorectal cancers are often caused by a poor diet and inactivity.
Avoid sugary drinks and processed foods. Eat a healthy diet of whole grains, vegetables, and lean meats. Try as best as you can to go organic with your meats, dairy, and vegetables. Many foods we commonly deem as “healthy” can be swimming with hormones and pesticides that are can cause cancer later on.
Commit to 30 minutes a day of physical activity, particularly if you have a sedentary job, like a desk-based job, or driving job.
3. Limit Alcohol
There are numerous benefits to a glass of red wine, but drinking too much and too often can have negative effects on your liver. Alcohol can increase your risk for cancers of the digestive organs.
4. Limit Exposure to Carcinogens
There are still inequities in our world. Some of us can’t help where we live. In fact, 65% of cancer deaths occur in developing nations.
But if you are aware of the toxicity in the air or food you consume, you’re one step closer to limiting your chances of getting cancer. If you live in an area with a high amount of pollution in the air, start wearing a face mask when you’re going to be outside for a long period of time.
Early detection can prevent cancer and save up to 3.7 million lives per year. Make it part of your World Cancer Day to be aware of your risk factors, and get screened for your risk!
